Let's talk about books. I like them, I'm listening to Wanda Wisdom chat
about books and last night I watched about two minutes of Larry King's
interview with James Frey. In case you're not paying attention, The
Smoking Gun alleges that Frey made up and/or heavily embellished events
in his book A Million Little Pieces (and, I'm assuming, his follow up
book My Friend Leonard). I love reading and read 1-2 books a week but I
haven't read anything by Frey. I don't know why, but I haven't--it
might have something to do with the popularity (when something is
extremely popular I tend to avoid it because I feel there's no way it
can live up to the hype surrounding it). If it's popular it has to be a
subject I appreciate for me to check it out.
So, the book is billed as non-fiction. Fine. They're saying he bent
the truth or flat out made stuff up. Well, that sucks. They're calling
for his head. Not cool. Seriously, if we were to fact check every
single memoir I think we'd be shocked...SHOCKED!...at the massive
amounts of fiction we find. Seriously, do you think that Augusten
Burroughs didn't bend the truth in Running With Scissors? I mean, he's
being sued by some of the very people depicted in that book for pete's
sake!
This whole thing smacks of a stunt. I had completely forgotten about
the book until this controversy started.
Speaking of writing, I need to get started writing cheesy romance
novels. I think I have figured out the formula...
