Kenneth Branagh is too much
Simply too much.
Today I turned in my first graduate level paper. Of course, I don't feel it's graduate level writing, but that's really for the professor to judge. Tonight we watched segments of Mel Gibson as Hamlet and segments of Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet. Both are far, far too old, Hamlet is supposed to be an angsty, clever twentysomething. Honestly, I think this is why Shakespeare remains popular and Hamlet is proof that generation x didn't invent angst, we're just the first generation to market it and make it a way of life, our raison d'etre. I have this love/hate thing with Mel Gibson. I know he's a despicable sort, that he has his flaws, blah blah blah. But he can act, that's for sure. His Hamlet was subtle, angsty and manic at the same time, and he pulled off the age difference. Branagh--well, he's too much. THe sets were too much. The whole thing was visually jarring.
