![]() I don't know what to tell you about this, but I saw it in a local antique shop. I was really, really tempted to buy it but if I remember correctly it was too pricy to buy. I believe it's a gent killing a polar bear, the polar bear having recently killed a seal. Circle of life, indeed. ![]() This rabbit was sunning him/herself right next to a busy sidewalk. whorin around
So, I'm about to do what I hate most. I swore I wouldn't do it, but times are tight and I kind of have to. You know things are rough when I get to this point, and hopefully I won't get in a situation like this for a while.
I'm so, so, totally broke. I'm very close to being out of debt, this has just been a rough two months. So here's what you can do; go to Sheila Denny and buy some hand made stuff. I'll even take custom orders, just contact me, comanche dot red at gmail dot com. Just remember--I've never begged for money before, and this will be the last time for a very, very long time. Notice I don't have a paypal donate button, I don't have ads (that hurricane poster project link doesn't count--I love south Mississippi and Louisiana so I hope you'll buy a poster, 100% of proceeds goes to the American Red Cross), and I pay hosting charges from my meager pay. I've got an excellent host (BurstNet). I started this web site with my pal Teri because, well, it seemed like it would be fun. I kept up the site as a central place for my pals to check in and know what I'm up to these days. In December we celebrate (?) eight years of schmoovenet.com. This is probably the closest I'll get to whoring out up in here. Oh, except for one thing...yes, I occasionally put up an Amazon Associates link, those are usually connected to my "One More Down" series for illustrative purposes. Feel free to use them. God bless ya.

The biggest obstacle to cross...
5/27/2006
SO, I realized why I don't like therapy, other than the intrusive questions, the uncomfortable silences, the cost, the drugs, well, you know.
It's the fact that I refuse to live in the real world. See, if you ask me what my dream job would be, I would tell you that I want someone to give me ten million dollars tax free, I would get to keep about 1.5 to 2 million to cover living and operating expenses, the rest I could manage and give to people/causes I find most worthy. Yes, it's the Miss America answer but it is the truth. Apparently this isn't realistic, but it is my ideal job.

How I Became Your Mom
5/21/2006
Ok, let's get it out of the way--that's a joke I've been dying to make. I'm not the first, I won't be the last. See, there's a local band, How I Became The Bomb, and I saw them for the first time last night. They were really good, seriously.
But anyway, headed to the Exit In. I think the last time I went there was either for BR-549 or the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Both were good shows if I recall correctly. And last night's was really good too, in spite of my ill fitting clothes, high heels, and the heat. As I mentioned, I'd not heard of HIBTB before but I have heard excellent things about them. THey did not disappoint. I have been informed they have an EP, I should really check that out. Next was Ghostfinger with a newly added horn section. Over the past year and a half since I first saw them they've added a total of four extra people which is just fine with me. They sounded very polished but were still the crazy motherfuckers I love so. Finally, the Clutters. I do love them, they are definitely in my top ten favorites ever. Back when I was at SXSW I was supposed to see them TWICE but the first show was over capacity (blessing and a curse--they're getting a lot of attention but gosh darn it, I wanted to see them), the second was cancelled for rain. I kinda wanted to leave before they played because my allergies, the heat, my feet, etc were really wanting me to get the hell out of there, but I decided to stay and am very glad I did; they played several new songs, all of which rocked like warm slipper socks.

Yesterday
5/19/2006
Yesterday was my 30.5 birthday. I figure if your birthday is supposed to be a special celebration then your half birthday should be the most mundane day of the year. So I went to the bank, bought some pet stuff, picked up a friend at the airport, ate dinner with my family, did some laundry, and bought gas (yes, I once again drove to the country for cheap gas. I saved about $2 on the whole tank, so suck it, bitches).
EDITED TO ADD: Forgot two very mundane things. First, stopped for an oil change, tire rotation, wiper blade change, and brake light replacement. Good times. Also, forgot that I rolled an assload of change. Don't laugh, I probably have close to $10 rolled. So that, plus $2 saved at the gas station is $12. That's a sushi lunch! But the end was probably better than my actual birthday. I stepped outside 9:30ish to watch the neighborhood fireworks. Really, really good show, I look forward to it every year and the fact that I can watch it in my yard in my pajamas is a bonus. There was some lightning off in the distance so that was pretty cool also. No soundtrack to the fireworks but they DID set off a bunch of car alarms so I suppose that will have to do. Denny wanted to fight the fireworks but I managed to corral him inside. Flashy did not care for them at all and made a quick dash for the front door when they started.

Nobody backs up like THE OUTLAW
5/18/2006
You know, "Outlaw" is probaby one of my favorite episodes of MST3K. And why wouldn't it be? A platinum haired dwarf? Jack Palance? Buffalo shots? What is not to love?
So anyway, it's based on a series of books, a series that will likely NOT show up on my One More Down list. A former boss actually read one of the books, it was probably "Outlaw of Gor," but I can't be sure. Anyway, he was as smitten with the episode as I was. He even saw the first movie in the series, in fact, I probably did too, you know, I can't really remember. So it seems the book series has spawned a group of folks to embrace the author's idea of female submission. As in slavery, people. Not equal opportunity slavery, but males holding dominion over females. I so did NOT pick THAT sentiment up in the movie, but then, it was MSTed pretty heavily. Speaking of Jack Palance, did you know his birth name is Vladimir Palaniuk? Well, imdb says it so I'm not one to question that. His biography is FULL of interesting facts. Even if you aren't a fan you should check that out. Fascinating. I mean it. What a bad ass mother fucker.

One More Down: The Debutante Divorcee by Plum Sykes
I don't know what to think about Sykes's books. I mean, she writes of a world full of summers, couture, travel, money, leisure, and social connections, but it sometimes come off as though she's OF the world but not IN it. Is she laughing with them or laughing at them? And who cares? I finished this book in one day so it's no skin off mine. It's summer so read something frivolous for once, you elitist snob. You could read worse (ahem, devilwearsprada *cough*).

One More Down: The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
Waters is one of those authors with significant time between novels but in a good way. She just has this knack for fiction that makes me so happy. Love the interconnecting lives, something I usually find a bit hokey and hard to swallow. And somehow it pulls off the balancing act of managing to be heartbreaking AND uplifing at the same time.
I do have a tendency to get a little bit lost when there are many characters, plus this book has an unconventional style that means rereading some parts. With Sarah Waters you really don't mind rereading. And then rereading. and rerereading. And if you aren't a reader be sure to put Tipping the Velvet on your Netflix list. Not quite as good as the book but still excellent. Labels: books

One More Down: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
So, I love Mr Gladwell. Seriously. He really makes it all sound so easy.
I first read The Tipping Point ages ago. See, it's all about how phenomena, buzz, etc are created. Well, that's really oversimplifying but I think you get the point. And Blink kind of follows along those lines, only not. As the title would suggest it's about thinking without thinking. As in, the snap judgments we make within seconds. Which is now how I'm going to live. I will not spend hours, days, thinking things over, if it doesn't feel right in the first five seconds it probably isn't right. Honestly, when I think back on the last couple of years some of the worst decisions I've made have had hours, days, etc of pondering behind them. Labels: books

Rumors of my ipod's death are greatly exaggerated
5/13/2006
As a quick scan will show (go ahead, I'll wait) my ipod's had issues for a bit. Around October it started not responding. It would just not come on, most of the time resetting didn't work, the only option was to just let the battery run down and start over again. Good times, right? So last week it just froze right in the middle of use. I reset it but it came up with the frowny ipod face. I was able to sync it, though, and went on with my life. Ok--flash forward to early morning yesterday: it's dead. I could reset it as much as I wanted, it was not going to cooperate. I attempted a restore even, that didn't work. I ended up at the annoyingly named Genius Bar at my local Apple store.
Wow. The scales have fallen from my eyes. Those apple folks know how to serve a customer. Since my ipod was still under warranty (just...) duder just hands me a new one. So I'm a listenin and a grinnin. I'm a changed woman. Yes, I still think they're a leetle pretentious, what with their quirky, trying to hard air and all. I mean, they're like an annoying music journalist--everything seems so contrived that even when they're not it seems like they're trying too hard to be cool. But whatever, their products look cool and their customer service is excellent. AND I'm able to tune out the world again, that's the real joy.

Schmoovecast #19: High School Leah, part one in a series
Major house cleaning here at the Meadows. I unearth some big time archaeological finds, decide to share some ephemera from my late teens. This is only the first part of two, possibly three. I just need to share my insipidness with all of you. Musings on AIDS, being yourself, Beavis and Butthead, Sasha Mitchell, and so much more! Quentin Tarantino overload too, although you don't experience much of it. Dr Gay, I don't know how you put up with me during these days. Enjoy the album art, it's my sister's dog, Flashica Simpson. Oh, I am just so close to being a hoarder...
5/04/2006
I cleaned up my guest room. We're talking boxes of stuff that hasn't been touched since HIGH SCHOOL. I combined a lot, got rid of a lot, and laughed at a lot. Some stuff I had forgotten about. Such as:
What's most interesting is that of the many things I've found I'm still in contact with the people who they are associated with. This is pretty cool. I love y'all.

Schmoovecast #18: We are legal now.
5/01/2006
Yep, so the schmoovecast is out buying its first pack of cigarettes LEGALLY. I talk about a few things--dogs, sports, dislike of therapy--all while driving to get cheap gas.

Some stuff I've read
I used to keep up with this religiously but I've not been. Here, since I am all headachy and missing crafty as a result, I shall update you.
1. The Girl Who Gave Birth To Rabbits by Clifford A Pickover A parable about the evanescent nature of youth. Kidding, it's non-fiction about Mary Toft, a woman who allegedly gave birth to rabbits (debunked). What drives one to shove dead animal parts in one's coot? Or maybe I should ask it this way: How much money would it take for you to agree to shove dead animal parts up your coot? Because, if I understand correctly, that's the next big reality program! 2. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion Y'know, this is going to sound so trite, but I really do wish I had a bond with someone the Didion did with her husband. I'll stop right there. 3. Labyrinth by Kate Mosse This book was over 500 pages long. Somewhere in the 400s I stopped and thought, "What the bloody hell is going on here?" I knew it had something to do with the grail and that sort of thing, but I really didn't know much beyond that. And, aroud that point, I guess Mosse got tired of writing out one part of the story so she sped things up by having a narrator tell our protagonist the remainder. But still, it was light reading, fast reading. Sometimes you want to watch a NOVA special on String Theory, sometimes you just want to watch "My Super Sweet 16."
