One More Down: I Am Not Myself These Days by Josh Kilmer-Purcell
If you've been paying attention you will know that I attended a book signing several months ago. Well, I've attended many book signings but I'm only referring to one. I love a good memoir, I love a good drag queen, therefore I did love this book. It seems the author loved a drug addicted male prostitute. That's really all I'll say, and that a certain chapter had a fantastic little glimpse into the effort that goes into being a drag queen.

One More Down: Possible Side Effects by Augusten Burroughs
6/25/2006
In my world, Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris and their respective partners get together once in a while for brunch. They exchange clever stories about their pasts, laugh, and exchange knowing looks.

Ghostfinger
So I'm trying to record Richie during "Rock" but I was too busy watching the action, plus there's no light so you can't see much. Still. Good times. ghostfinger.mov

livejournal fun

I love the LiveJournal recently posted images feed. it's a completely random peek into the lives of strangers. Good times. I'm not going to post the link here, if you do a simple search you'll probably find it. You're most likely to see:
In other words, the same random images you'd find anywhere.

Open letter to the Mormon missionaries in my neighborhood.
6/22/2006
Dear boys,
I've seen you wandering around my neighborhood for a few weeks now. You're always in your black pants, white shirt, black tie combo with the nametags for easy identification. And I know you're required to do this by the church so it's not exactly how you would choose to spend your late teens/early twenties even though you've had your whole life to prepare. In addition, summers in Tennessee are hot and humid. Now, I'm not jumping to the conclusion that you're both from Utah, but let's face it, odds are that you probably are. There is no one more Mormon friendly than me. Seriously. I don't even keep caffeine in my house. I've actually got a copy of the Book of Mormon somewhere in this house. I'd even invite you in and engage you in discussion about Joseph Smith, the angel Moroni, and I would even do my best to not discuss The Garment. Most people would come out of their various hangovers long enough to tell you to get the hell off their various doorsteps. So when I'm walking my dogs and see you walking down my street I say hello. It's not just politesse, it's the fact that I love to discuss religion. So when you reply hello back and THAT'S IT, I'm on the upset side. My dog even wanted to meet you. Flashy, well, he's going through a weird shy phase right now, don't mind him. But not even a "can we come by and talk to you later?" or a "here, take a copy of the book of mormon!" Try harder, bitches. Loveyoumeanit, Leah

Podcasting for good, not evil
6/14/2006
Listen to this npr.org story. Or you can read this story from the Boston Globe.Apparently to spread word faster than measles they used podcasting to reach those who work in the John Hancock Tower. Of course, they didn't rely solely on podcasts, but still, that this was used makes me so happy. I smell a thesis.
Yes, hoping to go back to school. Hoping to study that sort of thing.

Let's talk babies....
6/06/2006
...mainly because I need a break from writing a document.
So, lately there have been a lot of specials about the Duggar family. If you haven't heard or you're just too lazy to click on the link then maybe you just need to know that Jimbob and Michelle have sixteen biological children. Two sets of fraternal twins. Yes, they might be crazy, but they seem incredibly happy and hey, they're debt free and have goals. See, every time I see a special they all seem happy, of course, I know the camera can't show 24/7/365, but surely with eighteen folks the odds are they'll show at least ONE meltdown. But no, they're all smiles and modest clothes and soft voices. Oh, and the organization, wow. I love efficiency and they sure do know a thing or eighteen about efficiency. And you always, always have a friend. They appear to be evangelical, homeschooling Christians. I do identify as a Christian, but I'm not so much into the evangelical movement, and I'm not the biggest fan of homeschooling but I do believe it has some advantages. Their political platform is also a bit more conservative than mine, but I still respect that they do their own thing without apology. I mean, let's get one point clear--they've essentially made a living pimping out their fertility. But they seem to have it all figured out. That's what's important I suppose.

DVR's bitch
The one good thing about DVR is I'm discovering subscriptions to cable channels I didn't know I had. Which means obscure movies I haven't seen in forever. Right now I'm talking about "The Allnighter" here. You've probably never heard of it, but then, you weren't the biggest Bangles fan back in the Eighties. See, I was. I will not get into the level of my fandom but let's just say that if pictures of video ever surfaced SOMEONE would walk away with the Leah manse and fortune, such that it is.
"The Allnighter" came out in May of 1987. I was on the very edge of turning eleven and a half, my sister was just a few short days away from her seventh, I was wrapping up my sixth grade year, and looking forward to a fresh start at the local academic jr/sr high magnet. In addition to all this I was, as stated previously, a huge Bangles fan. Who wouldn't be? I mean, this was back in the day of "Walk Like An Egyptian" so you probably were too. So when I saw that a certain movie starring Bangle Susanna Hoffs I wanted to BE THERE. In addition it was rated PG-13. My parents really trusted my judgment so it wasn't completely out of the question. Of course, when it opened it was only at one theatre in town, a theatre that was quite a distance away and possibly in a bad part of town (either that or my parents just didn't want to haul my young self around). Needless to say I did not see "The Allnighter" in the movie theatre. However, my overindulged, undersupervised friend AM had all the movie channels and her own VCR. By the time I made it to her house she had already watched the movie several times and had most of it memorized. In fact, I remember a certain scene being reviewed over and over again to illustrate that there is NO WAY the tomato sauce would've splashed that high. I was so nonplussed by the whole thing. I suppose it was partly my relative innocence and partly the fact that it was just a craptacular movie. I do remember wishing I had Hoffs's stomach, but then I've never in my life had a flat stomach so who wouldn't? So flash forward nineteen years and I have all these crazy movie channels I didn't know I had, also previously mentioned. I was setting up recordings and what movie is coming on in the next couple of days? "The Allnighter" is! SO I set the DVR and waited. Today I watched "The Allnighter" for the second time ever and boy do I remain nonplussed. Who wouldn't be? This thing is five different movies packed into 100 minutes. I understand Red Herrings in a mystery or thriller but in a comedy? I swear, so much build up, so little pay off. To tell you a little about the story it all takes place on the eve of college graduation. This university apparently gives class credit for tanning, screwing, and surfing. It seems everyone is also graduating in four years, which I suppose I can expect given the atmosphere of the campus. They also have a valedictorian which I don't remember being part of the college graduation experience, but then my senior class was considerably larger. This school appears to have less than one hundred graduating seniors. But who am I to judge? Three gals share a decent sized beachfront house. Three COLLEGE students. Oh, and did I mention that this film was directed and co-written by Susanna Hoffs's mommy? Well, yeah. But anyway, you can't go home again, and sometimes that's pretty cool.

God Bless Chocolate
6/01/2006
So in the past month I've had truffles from the most amazing places. See, in our world of mass production, refrigerated shipping, and global village-y goodness it's nice to know that the world of local chocolatiers is not dead.
Last month when Julie came to visit she brought a delightful hand picked assortment of truffles from See's Candies, each one better than last. Today my mom and dad come home from the midwest with a box of Michelle's Truffles. Holy crap. Amazing. So, if you love me and you're going to be in my area why not bring me a box of your local chocolatier's truffles?

Y'all better hold me to this.
I'm going to try and exercise for a minimum of thirty minutes every day during the month of June. Don't know if it is feasible but I will try my hardest. So today I did a 30 minute step dvd. Hot dog. It nearly killed me.
I've really been off the fitness train for some months now. I've gained a little bit of weight (well, a lot) and it pretty much sucks. So here I go again on my own. One stumbling block--I just got DVR. Which means I can finally catch up on Degrassi.

Word of warning...
...the publix premium vanilla kind of smells and tastes like bug spray.
Also, why is it when I eat ice cream too fast I don't get an ice cream headache but instead get an ice cream kidney ache?
