    digeridumbass

I had a great day. I bought a digeridoo. Damn. STupid. It is so difficult
to play, my pal D who lived in Australia for several years said I better
have good breath control. Boy, was she right.

But let's get back to this. I met Mands on the opposite side of town and
headed out to the most amazing bakery in the whole doggone world and scarfed
down a scone. And oh, was it the most amazing thing. We checked out the
Plowhaus print exhibit, they were lovely and I walked away with some ideas.
I kind of wanted to buy one, it reminded me of my great grandma Mama Adkins
(pronounced momakins). It was pricy though. gosh.

Lots of thrift shopping. a couple of craft shows. It was at one of the
craft fairs where I bought this crazy thing. Damn.

    Kenneth Branagh is too much

    Simply too much.

Today I turned in my first graduate level paper. Of course, I don't feel it's graduate level writing, but that's really for the professor to judge.

Tonight we watched segments of Mel Gibson as Hamlet and segments of Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet. Both are far, far too old, Hamlet is supposed to be an angsty, clever twentysomething. Honestly, I think this is why Shakespeare remains popular and Hamlet is proof that generation x didn't invent angst, we're just the first generation to market it and make it a way of life, our raison d'etre.

I have this love/hate thing with Mel Gibson. I know he's a despicable sort, that he has his flaws, blah blah blah. But he can act, that's for sure. His Hamlet was subtle, angsty and manic at the same time, and he pulled off the age difference. Branagh--well, he's too much. THe sets were too much. The whole thing was visually jarring.

    What the hell?

i don't complain about traffic or my commute as a rule because, let's face it, we all deal with it and every human who drives a vehicle to work during peak hours knows that it sucks. It's a universal problem.

But this morning I had some issues with my morning commute. It would seem I'm invisible. Either that or I commuted from beyond the veil. I had three, THREE people try to merge into the lane I was in at the time I was occupying it. This happens from time to time, most people are stupid and I do drive a small car. Three times, though? in a fifteen mile commute? That is ridiculous.

This is all coming at a time when I'm feeling particularly fragile about blending in with the crowd, not making my mark on society, just basically fading to the background and living a long, lonely existence. It really didn't help. Hey, I'm dramatic. take it or leave it, bitch.

So, technically I partially own a home in Belle Meade...

So I wake up and discover the Chancellor of Vanderbilt is a spendthrift and his wife is a stoner. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but his wife does use marijuana medicinally, but the spending doesn't surprise me. The Chancellor's home is in a tony neighborhood and he does entertain most nights of the week. And, honestly, a personal chef?

    I love television

I honestly don't care what anyone says, the new show Heroes is fantastic. ACtually, I thnk it's gotten good press, but I've read a few things calling it an X Men rip off. Perhaps, it's got that human mutants with legitimate human issues going for it. I really enjoy it. The cam girl looks like my girly doctor which isn't the best association. I love it.

Oh, the Gocco is worth every penny

Every penny. I started printing the calendars this evening. Some of them aren't as inky as I would like and I had to reink more frequently than I thought, perhaps I'll post more detail later. I do like them though, but I like that photocopied kind of look. And I highly recommend Judy at Northwood Studios. I'm so excited! I've already got an idea for some prints, rock on.

Oh, and I have to bring this up. When I see commercials for Sex and the City on basic cable channels it just annoys me. See, I've seen every episode, and I spent many girls' nights watching this very show. Looking back it was terrible. In fact, I kind of knew when I was watching it it was terrible. Friends is the same way.

Ok, Yann Martel has a way of writing that makes me so happy to be a reader. No lie. One question though, if you're on death row and you get a last meal how do you know you're really going to get what you want? My mom is the best cook I know, how do I know my last meal will be as good as my mom would cook it? Some people can really fuck up cornbread, for example. How can I be sure my cornbread won't be sweet and disgusting?

    The Champion of Divorcee Acres

It was high time to fill the car and check out the under new ownership gyro shop. Good times. Adulthood is everythng I hoped it would be and more!

So as I'm passing through a busy section of Divorcee Acres I notice a young man crossing the road. This is an odd sight because no one really walks in DA. Even though they've got these lovely bike lanes and sidewalks you'll notice that they are rarely used for anything except fitness. Of course, fitness is a noble cause and should not be scoffed at but still, you'd think the fine folks of DA would incorporate fitness with daily activities. Me, I should take my own advice. But anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.

So this young man who is obviously not in the pursuit of fitness is crossing at a busy intersection. Over his shoulder is something, perhaps a coat or towel? But then my former WWF fandom comes in handy and I realize it's a belt, the sort that champions are awarded. From my car I can't tell much, but it doesn't look like a child's toy, and if it is then it's really nice, almost too nice for children to play with. I should note that this guy is also strutting. I know there are local wrestling leagues but why?

By the way, the new owners of the new gyro place are very friendly and the food is delicious. I know that gyros are the new vogue in fast food in these parts but usually it's tabouli free and loaded with way too much yogurt sauce or, worse yet, RANCH.

At any rate, I'm supposed to be writing a paper on citizen kane.

I tried to put off taking the muscle relaxers but may be forced to tonight. After i make a teeny pizza. It won't be the same without the spinach, which I threw away. I mean, I'd already eaten half the bag, but I got tired of my mom bugging me.

I had a horrible thought today: I can only be a mom if I can be assured that I will have cute children. I was a cute child (ahem, ahem, ahem, and again ahem) even though adulthood hasn't been so kind to me. Still, look at all that red hair. Any proposals of marriage must be accompanied by baby pictures. I insist.

Still no sign of the gocco. i'm getting antsy!

    It works. IT WORKS!

I bought a polaroid camera a hundred years ago at a thrift store. The film is expensive but I decided why the hell not and bought a packet of film. Now, do know that I don't even know if this camera works, and the film costs more than the camera. When tested, however, the camera works just as it ort. Plus it scares the dogs!

I'm so excited. Happy polaroid days are here!

I also started the process of making cool magnets. to test it out I cut some pictures from magazines. Pictures when they're done.

Oh, and after crafty night which is now in the afternoon I heard a neat story on NPR about why the Monkees remain popular. I did love that the correspondent mentioned that most monkees fans hate the theme from the show. It's true! And most of us don't like Daydream Believer either!

    Food Issues

It has been well documented on the schmoovenet blog that I have been eating a lot of spinach lately. Now there's an e.coli outbreak all over our United States. Apparently no amount of washing or cooking gets rid of the e.coli, but since I started the bag I'm probably exposed already so if I go absent from the bloggery, well, think of me often.

I'm craving a filet mignon so bad. SO bad. Medium rare with a loaded baked potato and fresh, hot rolls. Damn. I've been blogging about food a LOT lately. such is the life of Leah.

I've read that Meatloaf has a third Bat out of Hell album coming out. It has been noted that I think Bat out of Hell is one of the finest rock and roll albums ever made. I admit I never really heard anything from the second Bat out of Hell album except for what was played on the radio. Is Steinmann involved? There were some legal issues that make me think otherwise.

    TGIADOTW*

Ah. just got paid, friday night, party hoppin, feel all right.

    • So there's now an 80GB ipod. Now, I really have no need for a video ipod, I mainly use it at work and in the car, but 80GB is HUGE. Like, in a big way. Right now I have probably filled up only 40GB of my 60GB ipod photo but doggone if my emusic account won't push THAT to the limit. As soon as I buy the 80GB it'll be instantly replaced by an implantable 1000GB unit that gives you superstrength.

    • As I understand it Flashy's on his way over tonight.

    • Samantha, merci beaucoup pour l'info. I had no idea where to begin my search. Everything I tried turned up promotional companies. And you've totally helped me find other stuff I'm looking for. You get the first calendar. The main stumbling block in my plan is that my freakin Gocco hasn't gotten here yet! Ok, this is normal post service behavior but I'm going nuts.

    • you can't go home again. In the candy dish up front they've got Dubble Bubble. I had a piece of apple, it was eh. So then I go get grape, I remember grape being one of the best tasting things evaaaaaaar. No, now it's crap. Luckily the texture is still mostly the same and I totally understand why "won't stick to dental work" was a big selling point back in the day. I have one, ONE filling and this gum is only slightly annoying.

    • Time to find lemongrass. the lemongrass martinis at PM are amazing and the only beverage I'll spend close to $10 on that doesn't involve 10 different liquors and a fancy plastic cup. I hope to make my own lemongrass infused vodka. My local grocery has lemongrass PASTE but not the lemongrass itself.

All this talking about PM makes me hungry for gyoza, kamachi, and a martini. Let's go.

    • This is the first Saturday night in a long time that I'm not going to see some fabulous band. What do I do with myself? Zoo, maybe, if the weather is nice.

    Hot.

forgive the sidewaysness of this pic. I've had this recurring neck muscle spasm issue for years. It mostly went away after some physician-type intervention, and completely went away after the reduction surgery. But now it's back and better than ever (assuming, of course, my neck pain is a Liza-esque balladeer).

Long time readers of this blog will remember a car accident last December (and short term readers can just go look in the archives) which resulted in some neck strain. i'm wondering if this kicked it off again? It has only come back once since then, that was more related to a weird sleep position.

the other night I hit my head while getting into my car. I hit the right side but could feel it in the left lower jaw area. did this kick it into high gear?

It starts in the neck and radiates up my face stopping at the left top of my head above the temple. It was so bad in a meeting yesterday that my boss thought I was sulking. no, it was just so bad and those crazy faces and dropping my head into my hands (where I was giving it a small massage unseen from her side of the table) are the only way I can get a little temporary relief.

That and heat. Unfortunately my rice filled sock is at home, all I have is this ginormous Therma Care which makes me look so damn fine, like a senior citizen. Prescription muscle relaxers help, but those are at home and really not an option for workday use.

Oh, and add to this a minor health scare this morning. you know those things that if they happen you're supposed to alert your physician? One kind of happened this morning. Brief but scary. It's one of those things that could be completely benign or completely dangerous. Not related to muscle spasms.

Without the oregano there can be no connection between the mozzarella and the crust

Ok, I've further perfected the $30 pizza (no, it does not cost that, but it is a bit pricy--I can't remember if it's Sally or Mom who gave it that name). You use the store bought crust. spritz with olive oil and shake a little garlic powder (or garlic salt even--I would'be preferred the salt myself) to flavor the crust a bit. in a sauce pan saute bell peppers and minced garlic until the garlic is a lovely brown color (hint: start with the bell peppers, they take a little longer to cook). When this is done, put this mixture on the crust evenly. Top with a little bit of oregano, basil, and spinach--a couple of sprigs of the first two should be fine, but to your personal taste is fine--shred it up a bit because you like bite sized pieces. top with a blob of that fancy deli mozzarella cut into tiny cubes (save a sliver for yourself--ths stuff was put on the earth for our use and we are indeed blessed). sprinkle a little coarsely grated parmesan over the top. Bake according to the instructions on the crust, but it should be about ten minutes depending on how you like your crust. I usually end the process by putting the oven on broil for a couple of seconds but BE FUCKING CAREFUL CHACHI OR YOU'LL BURN THE SHIT.

    Mmm. Now that's amazing.

LAst night's class was Metropolis, the early 80s version with the color washes and the pop soundtrack. It wasn't as annoying as I thought. The Prof says we watched this particular version due to length. Never fear, we did watch segments of the most recent release with the original score and restored footage. The difference in the clarity is amazing. One thing's for sure, I want the font they used for the numbers on the clock.

    Semantics

Something's been bothering me since this weekend and I now realize what it is.

Let's start with Valentine's Day, 2005. I gave my (now ex-) boyfriend a copy of The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I loved the book, I loved the message, I loved the simplicity, and I loved the meerkats. Meerkats kind of had a sentimental significance and I, being all about the symbolism, decided this was the perfect gift. He liked the book.

    Moving on.

Saturday night I'm in a local restaurant waiting for a band. I brought a book (no, I do not normally bring books to venues, but this venue allowed for that), the book was The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios by Yann Martel. So I should note that I knew the ex (the one in whose honor I celebrated the anti-versary) would be there as he was involved in one of the performances. I'm chatting with his bandmate, book title side up on the table. Ex walks by, notices the book, and asks if it's the same Yann Martel who wrote the book that he read.

Yes. the book that he read. Not the book that I gave him.

No, the phrasing shouldn't bother me, but I should note there was a pause before he said it, and no, he wasn't drunk.

Also I'm having therapy issues and will likely turn in my notice during tomorrow's appointment. Do you give therapists notice when you decide not to see them anymore? this, combined with some other stuff not worth mentioning here left me a bit fragile. but I'll get through it. stiff upper lip! tits up, ass out!

Ah well. I just ordered a Gocco, so, Rocco.

    More tapes

As blogged about previously I dug some old cassette tapes out of the various places they're stored in this here home. Good times. Right now I'm going through one that seems to be lots of MTV stuff. Yep, I did a lot of taping back in the day. So I just saw the video for Mother by Danzig and just remembered how HOT Glenn Danzig was. Probably still is. I remember back in the college hearing somethng about him playing Wolverine in a movie version of the X-Men, and really, that would've been good casting. Of course, Hugh J was good too, but that Glenn Danzig. Man.

Now it's Whatta Man by Salt N Pepa. What a sad life I had back in college. Did you know Tupac's in the video? You probably did. It's probably old news.

Oh, and last night I got to see the fabuleux Drakkar Sauna once again. Love them, love them, love them. So much. Love. I added a new DS tee to the collection, added a new CD to the playlist. Rock.

Now it's Beck, Loser. We were pretty much obsessed with Mellow Gold back in the day. For reals. That, Green Day's Dookie, Dr Dre's Chronic. Man. Nintendo playing music, good times.

Oh, and in case I forgot to mention it I totally bit my tongue in my sleep two nights ago and it still hurts. Son of a bitch.

    Friday Night Random

    • I am done with my therapist. DONE. I hate my therapy as I've documented here before, and I'm getting that real impersonal feeling from my therapist. I'm not expecting her to know me as well as Sally, but I do at least expect her not to ask me every week which medication I'm on, what dosage, and a few other questions which only dredge up the past. Plus I notice her staring off into space.

    • I'm watching some outtakes from the show House. What's amazing is that even when Hugh Laurie flubs his lines he doesn't revert to his hot, Brit accent. Did I ever mention that my sister didn't know Laurie was a Brit until she saw him on Inside the Actor's Studio a few weeks ago? It's true.

    • Flashica Simpson, Captain Eyeboogers, Mr Milk Mustache, Crooked Teeth Dog is here. Yes, we all make up names for our pets. Good times. Denny is also known and Dennis, Little Man, Mon Petit Monstre, Mon Favori Chien Brun, Old Man. Yes, Denny is bi-lingual.

    • Have you seen this horrid Gap commercial, the one with Audrey Hepburn dancing to Back in Black? It should be known that I love the ACDC, and Audrey Hepburn is fantastic. The two, however, should not be combined under any circumstances. NEVER. I'm on the Gap's mail list and normally have no complaints with them, but this time I draw the line.

    • I do not understand fashion. First, I watch Project Runway and don't see a damn thing wrong with Kayne's creation. This is not just because I love Kayne, it's also because it was a gorgeous dress that, if put in my size, would look amazing on me. So the morning after I watch the ProjRun I see a woman crossing the road on the way to work. I can't tell if she's a homeless woman wrapped in a blanket or a panfully fashionable woman wearing a giant cloak. This is one of those parts of town where it could go either way.

    • I've been enjoying a ginmonade. That's gin and lemonade mixed. Try it!

    • I've been cooking lately. I have some garlic bulbs left from Julie's visit when she made an amazing Caesar salat. I sauteed some green bell peppers, minced garlic, and fresh basil in olive oil and added whole wheat penne pasta. Delicious. So I have enough left over for more fun.

Now, it should be noted that before I was the exotic yet bitter grande dame some call Sheila and before he was DR Gay, we were just budding high school hag and pal (yeah, yeah) who spend many after school hours and snow days cooking chicken, rice, chicken with rice, chicken with assorted spices, etc. I think you understand...the short version is we did a lot of kitchen experimentation. Well, I still do, I'm sure Dr G still does with his fancy Cook's Illustrated subscription and all. So tonight I made a pizza with a pre-made crust, sauteed minced garlic, chopped basil, chopped spinach, fresh (like the stuff you have to get in the DELI) mozzarella, and sliced green and red bell peppers. It turned out amazing...belle et delicieux. Of course, if I had it to do over again I'd use two or three cloves of sauteed and minced garlic, more basil, and maybe some parmesan or reggiano cheese. You may want to try it with pine nuts, tomatoes, and sliced garlic instead. Maybe oregano, red onions, toasted sesame seeds? Good times.

    • I need a Gocco. If you can give me one, do so. I've looked on ebay and that's somewhat helpful, I just hoped to pay less for one. By the way, would it be worth my while to post my Amazon wish list or perhaps a link crediting my Amazon Associates account?

    • Charles Busch is a genius.

    Who am I these days?

Honestly, in the past year I've probably turned my alarm clock off in my sleep about five times. This is alarming (ha! HA HA!) because before now I've done this maybe five times in my ENTIRE LIFE. It always seems to happen on a morning when I have had very, very little sleep the night before. It's rush rush rush to get ready, rush rush rush to get to work in SCHOOL YEAR TRAFFIC, and rush rush rush to get the 3/4 miles from the parking lot to work (I walk mostly). Ugh.

    Happy 500!

    Color Theory ate my balls

I'm having trouble wrapping my tiny girl brain around color theory. It's so abstract. I'm trying, I've got some piece of crap movie on in the background to work as a reference point and a stress breaker. I am totally seeing the whole point of affinity and contrast of color, though. Even in this crap.

    My head hurts, too.

BUT many thans to SMizzle for the Hobby Lobby heads up--they have some screen printing supplies for sale this week. I was unaware until this point that they even had such items, now I know I'm not the Expensive Art Store's bitch. Hobby Lobby is my new boyfriend. They even had some stuff on clearance. Hooray! Now I know why my friend Sally lives in the HobLob.

I kinda want to go get some pasta, but I totally know that would be a bad decision nutritionally. Nothing else is appealing right now, and I don't have much in my house. Arg.

    What defines a Southerner?

My buddy Sally is one of the few people I'll talk to on the phone for long amounts of time and not mind it at all. One reason is the questions she'll ask for discussions sake. For example:

    What defines a Southerner?

It isn't simply a matter of geographic or historic boundaries. Is Kentucky the South? Not according to historic records, but lots of folks say so. Sally had this discussion with a Northerner with an interest in the South, he stated it's our pugnaciousness. I say it's our graceful survival. Depending on where you live you've got horrid humidity, rough patches in winter (shut up, Dr G. You know how the roads get here), hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes (although we've yet to see one truly damaging), mosquitoes. Add on to this we're the butt of the rest of the USA's jokes, and are probably the most misunderstood area of the US. We were decimated by war and rose from the ashes. And with all this people are SO nice here. It's difficult for me to travel to other parts of the country because people just aren't as helpful, respectful, or just plain nice.

First person who says racism gets a boot in the ass. Racism exists everywhere, it isn't any worse or better here than anywhere else.

I also said we can be defined by food, but she assures me this is a humanity thing, not a southern thing.

Also, I'm tired, on allergy meds, and Flavor Flav is on TV. All of those make you prone to run off at the mouth.

    Crafty Corner: Discharge Printing

Is that what you call it? At any rate, I bought some discharge paste some time ago because I really just wanted to see how it worked. I never take a class and I never read a book all the way through, I read just enough to do what I need to do at that point and then wing it the rest of the way through the process.

Discharge paste not only has a disgusting name, it also has a disgusting smell and a disgusting consistency. You can use it the same as you would normal printing inks, and when it's dry you run an iron over it. It literally disappears before your very eyes. It's pretty cool, like those color changing cups and straws that you get at fast food places. Being the half ass I am, though, I didn't follow instructions. I read wrong--I thought I was supposed to STEAM the paste out, so after much frustration I reread the instructions and realized I was supposed to steam IRON.

I'm really pleased. Really, really pleased. The shirt in the picture is 100% cotton, but I also tried it on a poly cotton blend I happened to have (read: made a mistake printing on and kept around for experiments) and while it didn't do as well as the cotton it still did work.

But the name, when combined with the consistency, is just awful. I propose we rename it "color removing magic goo."

More on the anti-versary and NOLA's anniversary

You can read the first part of the title as "Moron: the anti-versary" but no, don't. So while I lament the end (when it was good it was amazing, when it was bad it was absolutely awful, there was rarely middle ground) I am glad of the things that have come from it. Wait, have I blogged about this already? If so, I'm doing it again because it deserves it. Anyway, i've met some amazing people who have become close, and most definitely best friends. Sort of like joining a sorority, no(yes, I do have the t-shirts, just like a sorority)? I've discovered a lot of good stuff locally (music, vendors, restaurants). I've learned my limits, what I can expect from myself and what I don't want in a potential mate for life. I've learned that I'm not a heartless bitch and I CAN allow myself to love another person and not just flit from clique to clique without developing emotional attachments. I've also learned to not date musicians unless you do (ambiguous? yes), and don't date an unrepentent, proud addict.

Plus, you know it's been a year since Katrina, and if you don't, well, perhaps it's time to turn on a tv or radio or step outside the house. I've spoken to a few co-workers and pals with ties to NOLA and they need your tourist doll-hairs. They are apparently so happy to see tourists, which is a different reception than I remember getting when I made my way there two years ago (damn, has it been that long?).

Why don't we all go to New Orleans? We can stay at the St Peter's Guest House (two blocks from Bourbon! One of the New York Dolls died there! Excellent 24 hour bar/restaurant across the street!). I'm as serious as a heart attack here. Let's go. I'll even price it for you and buy you your choice of a Hurricane or a Hand Grenade when we get there.

Don't forget, Mississippi had a hurricane too.
