Are the motherfuckers ready for the fatherfuckers?
I got back from the spring MLAS preview. What does this mean? well, for one, I got to see the classes they're offering for spring. I'd pretty much decided to take the drawing class but knew it would fill up fast as it is limited and seems really cool. This way I could be well informed for second and possibly third choice. Well, as expected once they opened the sign up sheets there was a mass movement to the front. Luckily my name was already on the sign up sheet for drawing (I asked ages ago but wanted to make sure).
So you should know that of course, that all slots filled up, and then more slots were drawn in and those filled up. I thought "Crap,I've been here before." See, last semester I was really looking forward to taking a class that was limited but couldn't get in. I thought this might be the case here as well. I ask the Dean of the progrm and he tells me that they're going to take the first however many signed up, no lottery, no seniority, although he stated that bribes are welcome. I felt bad because there were classes with only two or five people signed up. Interesting classes to be sure but it's like going to Sweet 16th and having enough money for only one scone. I mean, there were four of the six classes that I wanted to take (we are limited to one per semester). So once I found out that I am more than likely going to be in this class I was excited. like, annoying excited. Like, I drove WAY too fast because I was that excited. Talking a mile a minute excited. Oh, and the american apparel store has opened in Nashville! Labels: school

Scary Alan Rickman
Tonight in class we watched a movie I can guarantee you've never seen: "Closet Land." So it's crazy and intense. I think I could write about it. Our other option is the Incredibles.
I'm thinking that since I've written two papers on Kane totally around 12 pages I could probably get a thesis out of the deal. Rock.

Denny and me
Your update, should you choose to read it.
Denny's just fine, no more ointment, but a few more pills. I can't get him off of the dog blanket to save my life. I moved it to the couch because he was obviously tired of sitting next to the window. I can get him to leave for treats and potty, that's about it. Me, I haven't had a dizzy spell in almost two weeks. Occasional numbness but nothing as bad as it was before. OH and I got a really cool book about Welles and Hearst in the mail. I'm not sure who sent it (I have a suspicion, message sent, awaiting confirmation), but thank you so very very much!

One More Down: Awake in the Dark by Roger Ebert
11/26/2006
I know the box to the left shows the author as David Bordwell. He wrote the foreword. Aside from a few essays in the final section the entirety is written by Ebert. so there.
Roger Ebert is fantastic. Most folks only know of him as the fat dude on Siskel and Ebert. Well, up yours. Firstly, he's lost a lot of weight (no, not in the Star Jones way. Ebert's weight loss was due to a bout with cancer.). Secondly, Siskel died several years ago and now the co-host is Richard Roeper. Finally, he's a film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. If you're not familiar with his column i highly recommend you read. A friend asked me for a non-fiction recommendation after finishing the Harry Potter series. I mentioned this book and he told me he wasn't into movies like I was and really couldn't read reviews of movies he'd not seen. Well, I said, I haven't seen many of the movies he reviews but never once felt as though this was a problem. Ebert has a way of writing about a movie that just makes sense. he's incredibly brilliant but writes in a way that's easy to read. To me, the smartest people make being smart look effortless and don't feel the need to talk over your head to prove intelligence. I have loved Roger Ebert for years. He's got a healthy respect for cheesy movies and never comes off as a film snob. he does scene by scene analysis of movies at several venues and what I wouldn't give to attend one of these sessions involving "Citizen Kane." If you're looking for a late birthday/early christmas present that would be it. i suppose for the time being i'll have to settle for the commentary track on the DVD. however, we will have to agree to disagree on "Crash."

Tom Waits for no man
11/25/2006
Dear those of you who were at the Basement Nov 25, 2006 and left before it was over,
You missed the best part. You really did. So for those of you who weren't there it was a Tom Waits tribute and benefit for Toys for Tots. It was my kind of show: lots of bands, short sets, minimal time between sets. As you may have guessed the artists played Tom Waits songs. What I find disturbing is how many people left. When I got there it was PACKED. I had to park well down the street and when I got in I could barely make it through to the bar. Seriously. By the time the last act started the room was nearly empty. Lots of amazing performances. My very favorite was Chris Crofton who performed part of his set without any backing music which just emphasized the beauty of the lyrics. His final song just about broke my heart. Close second was John Wesley Myers who is amazing in any performance. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention his mighty fine ass. But really, all the acts were great. Sorry y'all missed it. I should also mention that I was only going to go if I got three pages of my paper done. By 9:30 I was typing my last paragraph on page six so YAY I was ready to go and my paper is done!

Give me some money so I can get high.
I've never hidden my love of Ghostfinger. I love them. I don't think I've seen them in several months and I'm glad to have them back. Last night they performed at the Basement. They started with Rock. Now, you may ask how they can start with Rock? Where can they go from there? Well, all over the place, my friends.
There was something wrong with the sound, though. Or maybe it's just that I forgot my earplugs. My ears are ringing, I'm getting old I suppose. So then I came home and enjoyed some of my missed thanksgiving desserts. Holy crap, the best apple pie I believe I've ever eaten. Seriously. Did he use granny smith apples? It didn't even need ice cream, that's how good it was. Criminy.

Denny's Duoplex
11/24/2006
It's a warm day. Denny's outside. I've got heat (not that it matters today). God's in his heaven and all's right with the world.
Yesterday I decided to go through my DVRed movies and my Netflix films. Here's the run down:

The heater
11/23/2006
The dude came by to fix the heater--and not too soon I might add! Space heaters just don't do the job. I was either too cold or too hot all night.
so it turns out the folks who installed the compressor a few years back used the wrong connectors. I don't really know what this means but I do know that they BURNED OUT. This TOTALLY explains why I came home Weds night and smelled fire. Just think how dangerous this could've been! So the nice HVAC guy fixes this and tells me where I can find a replacement filter since my compressor is an odd size and has a reusable filter. See, my filter has a hole in it, a hole of which I don't know the origins. So, heat! Labels: drama

The new Beatles album
So apparently the Beatles have a new album out. Bosh, you say, half the Beatles are in heaven! To which I reply that you obviously don't know what's going on, my friend. And then I proceed to distract you while I steal your wallet to buy the new Beatles album. See, I like it, but then I've never been like a huge be all end all Beatles fan.
We listened to it during thanksgiving dinner. Some people found it offensive and wrong. I personally liked it, it sounded pleasant enough. Oh sure, the debate was incredibly heated, I had to leave the room at one point because I was in fear of getting pulled into a particular conversation about the mastering and how it was wrong. Still, it was a wonderful alternative to the family dinner. Denny's getting better. He actually just got finished eating actual food for the first time since Tuesday! Labels: music, pop culture

Denny's at his wits' end.
11/21/2006
So, today is the day Denny stops being a good patient. That's not to say he's a BAD patient, but he's losing patience. Every time I'd get off the couch he'd walk off his ass blanket and jump on the couch. I decided that it wasn't worth fighting over and just moved his ass blanket on to the couch.
He's also growing tired of the kennel. As would you, right? Luckily, the oozing isn't as bad as it was yesterday. It's still gross, but it's not as bad. Me, it's the same ole thing. I haven't left much due to not wanting to put denny in his kennel for long spans.

Denny update
I stopped by Target earlier and bought a loaf of white bread in anticipation of medicating Denny. I also bought jeans and work pants but that's neither here nor there. I don't want to get comfortable with this extra weight.
We're not here to talk about my gut (which I have named Prince, there's a reason for that but not right now). So I go pick up Denny from the vet's and I'm given four separate prescriptions. FOUR. Two pills twice a day (wrapped in bread, of course), one pain pill once a day (it's meat flavored!), and an ointment to, ahem, apply. I've got this old comforter that's pretty much been dogified so I dubbed this as the ass blanket. We head home and denny is so, so stoned. There's also other stuff I won't mention because it's gross, all I will say that if you've ever had an abcess lanced you know what I mean. Gross. We get home and my dad is there to meet me with old towels for his kennel. I'm so glad he was there when I got home because it helped me get the ass blanket and the bread into the house. Of course, the first thing denny does is scoot a couple of inches on the carpet. Gross. So dad takes him outside while I clean up the spot and lay out the ass blanket. So I get Denny to sit on an old towel (the ass pad) and bring him his friend Crazy Hedgehog and he promptly falls asleep. OH! before this I give him a Greenie. He manages to eat it, and why not? It's his very favorite in the whole world. Ok, so back to where we were--Crazy Hedgehog, asleep, etc. He attempts to get up and greet my mom when she stops by. She brings doggie underpants and latex gloves. Now, the doggie underpants are a good idea except they're for girl dogs in heat and have, if you can believe this, little ruffles around the tail hole. Now it's not humiliating enough for him to have his ass shaved a bit and then get confined to something called the "ass blanket" but I'm not sure I can put the undies on him. Poor guy. He's been pretty good about keeping his rear on the ass pad, but then he's a good boy. He doesn't like it when I try to move his rump to check the drainage but who would? He drank a little water, and just a minute ago I gave him his meds and put him in his kennel for the night. Before you get uppity I would like you to know that Denny was kennel trained so he has no problem with it. In fact, I keep it in my craft room and when I go in there he usually follows me in the room and makes a quick trip into the kennel just to show me what a brave little man he is. I would also like to say that this kennel training has made my dog mostly accident free, I could count on one hand the number of accidents he's had in the last six years, and most of those times were submissive urination when he was getting used to Flashy. He also went poo, I think it was kind of painful for him. It also smelled so, so bad. He's got food, water, and Crazy Hedgehog in the kennel with him, and I heard him drinking water just a minute ago. Anyway, dude on House is getting an MRI, but HE'S not wearing earplugs or foam blocks by his ears, and he's also not wearing that crazy cage over his face.

Health concerns in Divorcee Acres.
11/20/2006
LEt's start with me.
As you know, yesterday I went on my freakin birthday to get an MRI and a carotid doppler, this all relates to some dissiness and numbness I've been experiencing. The carotid doppler was basically an ultrasound of my neck. I got to see AND hear my heartbeat! It was a bit unnerving, the ultrasound lady wasn't terribly friendly, but then maybe that's because she's used to happy pregnant ladies. The MRI was a little better, the MRI lady was nicer and did a good job of explaining the proceedure. I wasn't all the way in the tube, just to right above my waist. I didn't have to strip down, I did have to take off my glasses and tongue jewelry. It wasn't too claustrophobic, and the machine made some pretty cool sounds. I thought it would be fun to combine the MRI sounds and my ultrasound heartbeat sounds and make some electronica. Oh wait, but I don't like electronica. The coolest was one part that almost sounded like a call and response. It was really loud, I shudder to think how loud it would've been without the earplugs and foam they used to block the sound. The result is that there's no problem really. The MD scheduled me an appt with a neurologist and my regular doctor. Denny is at the vet's office right now having an anal abcess lanced and drained. He'd been chewing on his bum for a few days. i'd planned on waiting until Friday to take him to the vet, thinking it was his anal glands bothering him. This morning I noticed his bum was red and raw and there was a large lump. A quick trip to the vet while I was being doctored revealed that it's an abcess, draining, antibiotics, blah blah blah poor little denny! Labels: drama

GENERALISSIMO FRANCISCO FRANCO IS STILL DEAD!
11/19/2006
It makes sense that I was born on the day of an event that sparked a Saturday Night Live running gag.
Does that sentence even make sense? Because my b-day dinner took place at a restaurant that has half price bottles of wine on Mondays. We ALL know what that means. Thank you very much to Dr G for the tattoos! Thank you OOLSamantha for the package. I love them both, and they complement each other, almost as though it was planned. Angi et famille, thanks for the disco ball, I love it! I will watch the mail--congratulations on the new house! I can't wait to see it and the family and Rosebud, hopefully in the fall. Rhonda, I love the card, as I love cheese more than almost anything. Thx to those who called and texted and myspaced bday wishes. NEWAYZZzzz, this has been a most fergalicious birthday, thanks to all who made it so. I'm sure I left someone off. I'm a little tipsy. A lot tipsy. More east side fun
11/17/2006
Back to the same ole estate sale and a couple of garage sales. good times! scones!
Ok. So the estate sale wasn't on Electric Ave, but it was on the way sort of. THis isn't the estate sale either. I've never thought about whether or not it's cool to take pics at an estate sale, but it should be. I didn't get any pictures of the house itself. I bought some stupid crap, then on to other sales. Then, good times, on to the zoo! I had to pick up my membership gift and then Dave and I headed straight over to the lorikeets! I will name them Randal and Dante! Sweet nothings. Old ladies on the East side
11/16/2006
It's my day off and I headed off early in the AM (well, relatively, it is a day off) to the East side for an estate sale that promised to be amazing. It was. This lady had obviously lived on the east side for years, likely seeing it go from being a nice neighborhood to a bad neighborhood and right back to nice again.
BUt you know what breaks a heart? Personal photographs at an estate sale. There were lots. I couldn't afford the older ones that were obviously priced for collectors of such things, but I could afford a snapshot of four young women improvising a kick line for the photographer. And a trip to the east side means a trip to Sweet 16th for delicious baked goods. I happened to get a Heavenly Scone that was still warm. Oh dear, it melted in my tiny mouth. Then off to a sale closer to home in Old Money Heights. The sort of home designed for those who enjoy entertaining, these folks obviously loved just that very thing. They even had a bamboo bar. Honestly! Labels: estate sales

A health and birthday update
11/15/2006
Health: I looked up my lab results. THey didn't make much sense but I saw that a few were read which meant they were outside the normal reference range. I was googling how to interpret these results (ah, google, what CAN'T you find?) when I decided I'd be better off grabbing a nurse in our clinic. I was informed that everything was mostly normal except I was a bit anemic (which can happen to ladies on a fairly regular basis IF you know what I mean) and I have a bit of an infection somewhere (I was informed that my allergies could be causing this). So we'll see what the final verdict is.
Birthday: the second wave of birthday fun rolled in. Apparently my bosses didn't know that I wouldn't be in tomorrow and had a surprise planned. THis had to be aborted FAST apparently so they handed me a bag and informed me that yes, it included items from their offices but that shouldn't be an indicator of care level. Sure enough, it consisted of small bottles of lotion, snacks, gum, candy, pencils, and at the bottom was a brand new unopened Robert Johnson CD. Which means someone (and I have a good idea who, I informed her that I would take it home and rip it and then let her "borrow" it) had a perfectly good unopened Robert Johnson CD just sitting around her office.

I hate doctors
11/14/2006
I'm in a bad mood so I'll keep this short.
My near-fainting spells are getting worse. I can't turn my head without my arm and leg going tingly and partially numb. I can't get in to see my MD so they put me in to see some random MD who didn't really listen to me and just had me set up for an MRI (on my freakin birthday for crying outside), a carotid doppler, and some blood work. Sure, I'm thankful I've got good insurance and I was able to get in fast but, you know, whatever. Let's order a bunch of expensive tests, it's better than actually listening! I'm not a traditional patient--I don't demand everything in the book when I'm having health issues. I'm slowly trying to get off the few medications I'm on. I know that my low copays are only a fraction of the actual costs and I know that the actual costs are what make insurance premiums so high. I'm an educated health care consumer and I don't like being passed off in lieu of actual treatment. She didn't even listen to all I had to say! I've got a history of dizzy spells but never to near blackout levels. I'm, understandably, freaked the fuck out. So much for short. I'm scared, nervous, and I talk a lot when I'm nervous. Well, I suppose I type a lot when I'm nervous.

Herod is a wonker.
Tonight in class was Jesus Christ Superstar. Not the clever seventies version your mom liked so much but a crazy 2001 revival. More on that.
The first thing that caught my interest was: Rik Mayall as Herod Y'all, I love the Young Ones. I like Rik Mayall. The rest of the movie sucked. SUCKED! Well, except for Pontius Pilate, he had an amazing voice. Why does Jesus always have to look like a hippie? I mean, Jesus WAS essentially a hippie, but can't he be more modern looking? And perhaps Mary Magdalene should have been costumed in something a little less--ahem--well, there's no delicate way to put this: when she bent over Jesus in one scene you could totally see where they blurred out her nips. Mostly wasted day
11/10/2006
Heck, it's barely after noon even! Mom and I went to estate sales this morning, they looked promising but were busts for the most part. I did end up with a swift (the Patterson folks didn't know what it was so I explained it, but I still don't think they got it, as they've let me know in the past that they're not crafty in the least) and a cute old lady purse.
THe most valuable item I came away with today was the lead on an estate sale on the east side next week and some delicious scones in my belly. Labels: estate sales

in the presence of greatness
11/09/2006
Last night before class I stopped in the dining hall for a rice krispie treat and a boite de verre. As i'm walking through the dining area i notice that "Flirting with Disaster" is playing overhead. Of course, the youngsters gathered are eating, gossiping, doing whatever youngsters do these days. i want to stop and yell "do ANY of you kids understand what you could be listening to? One of the finest Southern Rock songs EVER? DO YOU?" But I didn't. But I was happy to hear it.
Last night we watched Chicago which always makes me happy. they both! they both! they both! they both! they both! reached for the gun! the gun! the gun! for the gun. Good times. one of my favorites Labels: school

In Weekend Movie Going: samantha said... Yeah. I didn't go. I got a lot done, but no moviegoing. In I DO NOT GET IT, regarding my virgin Blade Runner watching: samantha said... I've never read anything by Philip K Dick. Is it worth it to check out any of his books? I read pretty much any genre so that's no problem, but have difficulties with serialized sci-fi/fantasy. In William Styron gets it: Samantha said... This guy isn't the regular host, the interviewer Terry Gross is. I really like her, and sometimes she snorts when she laughs which is endearing. But even with the guest host he's usually not that breathy. You know who is? G Gordon Liddy. But he's not on NPR and for that we are all thankful. In printing for YOU: samantha said... Cool. i've got a commission that needs completed and ready for the street by Nov 13 so I may place the shirt orders then. So, for all, and not just Our Only Listener Samantha (that's not her real name and she's not our only listener, but we just refer to her as that so much that it all comes out as one word), you've got until, um, Nov 14. Yes. I mean, I'll be placing more orders later on and I'm going to keep all of the screens for the forseeable future so this is not the last chance by any means. In Schmoovecast #28: the Time WARP: Anonymous said... I've clipped the original comment so please take a moment to click on the link above and it will open in a new window. Then come back here. Well spoken, Anon. I know that I've been most content with myself and those around me when I let my expectations go and live moment by moment. I'm slowly getting back to that. i've found "love," or what I consider it to be, when I'm not planning or expecting. in fact, I've found that i'm most attractive to others (and I mean this in a non-sexual way as much if not more than in a sexual way) when I just don't give a damn and present myself as is. Oh, and right on about love meaning something different every time you say it. I told a co-worker I love her when she gave me a sugary treat but didn't tell a man I loved him when he did something much more meaningful (now I mean that in a clean way, bitches).

Holy crap I love this show. LOVE. THIS. SHOW. I'm just a scoche behind, though. But I love that Hiro. And you know what? THe actor who plays Hiro is a fucking genius. And his character's name is a homonym.

printing for YOU
In addition to the trex shirt I am offering a few others for sale. They are available at pretty low prices, will depend on how many are ordered. You pretty much pick the color tee you want, size, and ink--again I can give you details depending, just contact me comanche dot red at gmail dot com, but price should be around $7-10. I'll be placing the order later this week. If you want to know what colors are available check out American Apparel. If you want undies or a tote that's also a possibility.

This week there will be two podcasts for your listening pleasure. I will likely post some videos also. I've got two more t-shirt designs to show (the pirate design you've seen, the other you haven't). Rock.

William Styron gets it.
I don't like to talk about depression because it's like talking about the chicken pox. Some of us have better stories about it than others, very few of us have absolutely no point of reference. But I've not heard such an accurate description of how depression feels until I heard this interview with the late William Styron from 1990 on Frrrrresh Air.

I DO NOT GET IT
Samantha was right. I could not get into Blade Runner. I feel like I missed something, like I fell asleep during an important part, which I'm pretty sure I didn't. What the hell is going on here? Seriously, I'm not trying to be dense, but someone send my a synopsis. Maybe it's because I saw the Director's Cut.
Also, Neil Patrick Harris is gay. Ok, that's about as shocking a coming out as it was when Lance Bass came out.

Death and stuff
11/03/2006
I figure by blogging about this it'll be an offical record now. So here we go...
Should I be murdered I do not want the murder sentenced to death. the reason I bring this up right now is I'm working on a commission and have 48 Hours (the CBS progrm, not the movie of the same name) and they're showing the mother of a murder victim meeting the killer. He's excuted (it's an old episode so it's under the governorship of Bush. WHO KNEW?)

Can you feel the loins tonight?
Sure, I'm cynical. I'm sarcasitic and snide. But every bad boy has a soft side. What does that have to do with me? Nothing, except to prove that I saw that commercial for Monster Ballads way too many times in college.
So my boss offers me a ticket to go see The Lion King. I accept because it'll be something to do--The Lion King isn't my absolute favorite Disney animation but I like it just fine, and puppets can be really cool so I accepted. Sure it dragged a bit, but the opening scene was amazing--the sunrise and the animals on the prarie. ANd Timon, oh my gosh. You guys know I like meerkats and the puppet was really cool.

Weekend movie going
I have no plas this weekend. None. So in the afternoon I'm thinking of seeing a movie. Can't decide between The Prestige and Borat. They're both appealing for different reasons. I'll probably be going by myself (otherwise I'd go see Short Bus) since most my friends are broke or busy or aren't into seeing movies in the theatre unless they involve super heroes, explosions, or action.
Meanwhile, if you enjoy seeing movies regardless of how you think they should be seen holler. I don't mind seeing movies by meself of course.
