Movie dreams
12/28/2006
I mentioned the movie dreams, right? THey keep going. In the past week there was a comedy about a snooty youth group and a ragtag bunch of underdogs coming together to triumph. Then there's the one about the trans man which is so convoluted and goes against everything being trans is that I don't even care to share.
Indeed, I also dreamed that I auditioned for Jesus Christ Superstar at a local megachurch. But wait....I was auditioning for the role of Herod. I would have also accepted the role of Judas. They can't all be winners. Labels: dreams

One More Down: Walking Shadows by John Evangelist Walsh
This book was a birthday gift from Angi, and I say thank you yet again as this is one of my favorite subjects. So, this book examines the hearst/welles face off (such that it was) back when Kane was released. It's pretty clear which side Walsh falls on, but he goes a little more in depth on the subject than I've read before.
Whether Hearst is the reason Welles wasn't as successful as he should've been or if Welles was just too difficult is really not the point. The point is that Citizen Kane is the finest movie ever made and if you disagree I will CUT YOU. To the white meat. Slice and dice, bitch. Labels: books

let me tell you a little something
12/26/2006
I mentioned the thin mint ice cream, right? well, a mere mention doesn't do it justice. to do it justice I would need to give it its own blog, myspace page, and shrine. it was oh so good. I pretty much keep thin mints in the freezer all year long--that line about how well they freeze is absolutely true.
So I can't remember if I blogged about the ice cream maker. If I did, then I'll do it again. At an estate sale some weeks ago they had one for sale. It was originally priced at $20. I was there on half price day and it was marked down to $10. I looked at it, determined it was missing a piece so I offered $5 figuring how expensive could the piece be? Well, it could be $30, and it was $30. It was a very integral part, in fact, it was the very part that made the ice cream freeze. So anyway, I followed the recipe for plain ole chocolate. it didn't specify how long it needed to churn so I decided to let it go 30 minutes. At the appropriate time I added in the crushed, frozen thin mint cookies. It was the lightest, fluffiest, most delicious flavor. Yes, I'm quite aware that Edy's makes a thin mint flavor during cookie season but that's just during cookie season. So now it's gone. NExt up I'm going to try the same chocolate and mix in andes mint pieces. Heck yeah. Labels: estate sales, food

How much fun is THIS? an ATM! actually, this provided the first drama of the evening as it wouldn't take my card, the son of a bitch It should be known that I like Billy Graham. He's been in the public eye for a very long time and has remained scandal free (wikipedia has informed me that he's not completely above reproach--see the link below for some controversies he's been involved in). So I was going to kneel in prayer but the rocks around the statue are sharp so I ended up humbling myself a little bit more than I intended. Superstar! Dr Gay is moved by the spirit. Some info from Wikipedia: Billy Graham is a Southern Baptist who left Bob Jones University because it was too fundamentalist. He is a registered Democrat who votes for who he considers right for the job at the time.

Take a moment
I've got this page linked in my links page but I'm going to link it here. This is a time sensitive one so go right now.
Postsecret receives a bootyload of people's secrets and posts new ones weekly. There are also books, tours, and music videos featuring the postcards. It has caused me to shed a tear or two once in a while and it has given me the "I'm not alone" feeling which can be both wonderful and depressing. Listen, we all have friends, we all are loved by someone, but there are times (especially during the holiday season) when we never feel lonelier. I know that this happens to me even though I know full well how good I have things. Is this getting maudlin? Sorry about that. I'm adding more now as I think about it. I wonder if my feelings of loneliness and isolation at this time of year are because I try to be fairly giving all year long and during the holidays I see how good people can be and wonder why they aren't this way all year? And maybe it comes down to selfishness, that I do good all year and think maybe this is the time of year I'd get some sort of reward? Maybe.

The whole "hanging out with Dr Gay" thing.
12/22/2006
After a quick gift exchange, a visit with the family, and a little old school sesame street we were off like a prom dress.
First we headed to Kate's for the annual Solstice Party. Honestly, I could've eaten the entire plate of chess bars. Really, they were excellent. Also there was a round of scattergories where Dr G and I shared first place with John's mom. Some highlights: person who wears a uniform: dominatrix (Dr Gay) something made of metal: Dokken (me) good times! But we were supposed to meet old pal Zach so we headed out to Play, a bar we'd never visited before. Wow. just wow. First, I should point out that there was this one girl who repeatedly went to the stage to tip the performers. She was absolutely gorgeous--amazing knockout figure, beautiful face, flawless skin. We later found out it was Calpernia Addams, she was apparently performing the next night (that would be tonight if you were wondering). This was a bit interesting as we'd been talking about the film Soldier's Girl on the way there. I thought I saw Joshua of Nemesis, but it really couldn't have been him. could it? I'm still not sure. Signs point to no, but if the twins had doppelgangers this guy could've easily been it. So we watched the drag performers. It was fun. And while our only listener Samantha couldn't join us we were very glad she sent the lovely Deception in her stead. After the first show ended we decided to leave. We ended the evening at the Hermitage Cafe, the best place to end an evening. Labels: celebrations, dr gay, food, nashville

As I stated in an earlier post (I was sending it from my cell phone because I was too lazy to get up and get the laptop) I now have speed skates. Holiday media
So, in the past I've refered to this season as the I Love Jesus holidays. See, I think that Christmas has now officially become its own entity. Christmas season means traffic, spending tons of money, terrible songs, trees, lights, and feelings of inadequacy. I Love Jesus season is much shorter and involves togetherness, church, hymns, harmony, joy, and Jesus.
I had an arguement the other day about the song "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." I hate it, it's a dumb song, and i was vocal about this. I was told it's no different from other holiday songs. Well, yeah it is. It's a bad song in any season. It's like comparing "My Humps" to "Can't Do A Thing." If you're looking for a media escape I recommend the following:

Even when I sleep
12/19/2006
I can't get away from work. I had a dream that my boss gave me the assignment to figure out how to more efficiently use human capital and office space. I told her to change the clinic hours (which would also allow us to serve the night shift every day instead of just once a month) and allow folks to work three twelves. And then we went to krispy kreme.
Did you know that in my dream state's krispy kreme they still have devil's food donuts? and the hot light is always on.

Tonight's MRI wasn't nearly as much fun as the last time. Not that the last one was great shakes. Anyway, they were at two different facilities. The first was at a boutique imaging center, the second was at the hospital.
This time I had to remove my brassiere which wasn't nearly as traumatic as it might have been a little over two years ago. But in that metal tube I was absolutely FREEZING. There was a cold breeze blowing over me that made my bralessness, ahem, evident. It seems as though I was in there a little longer than the first time and my head was strapped down this time. Also, there was no clever mirror over my eyes that allowed me to see my feet. I turned on my mental ipod wheich seemed to be stuck on dance music. Did I mention I was cold? I might have fallen asleep but I was too cold. When I came out of the tube this time I was a little lightheaded and needed help standing up. Of course, at first I didn't want to accept his help, after all I have been accused of being independent to the point of being a ballbreaker. But I did end up accepting his arm. I didn't warm up until I got to the car and had the heater running. It wasn't that cold, I was just chilled so bad. Labels: drama

![]() It's been the season of the white elephant. I've been to TWO, third tonight. good times, right? Yes. Thursday I recounted my misfortune at the department white elephant. Luckily the one that night was more fruitful. I walked away with a mexican marionette I named Pepito Calderon. Perhaps in a few days we'll have a vote for the official schmoovenet.com mascot (which is not Denny. Denny is a part of the staff here. if he had thumbs he'd have his own login). I then met the Nashville Rollergirls and Steve for a beverage (in that order). I am hoping to join the Rollergirls, I just need the bravery to go watch a practice and then the money to buy skates. Friday during the day was drudgery. I managed to make my way over to Love Circle for an estate sale. Not just any estate sale, the estate was that of the vocal coach for *NSYNC. It was a bust. A total bust. No good. Friday NIGHT was great times. I met Steve at the Mercy Lounge for Dr Dog (ok) and the Black Keys (rocked my FACE right off and on to the stage you see in the picture above left) (oh, and thank you again, Steve--if you had a nickel for every time I've said thank you you'd have, like, all these nickels). Someone of interest was there, Dr Dog pointed to them and made a comment. I don't know who it was, but whoever it was was standing not far from where we were. Apres, nous sommes alles a l'Hermitage, le cafe le plus bon, where I joined the clean plate club. Late night led to late morning. Late morning was further latened due to the absolute worst headache I've had in some time. moving around didn't help, only made it worst. advil didn't help, 32 oz of water didn't help. Here's what I decided--I had eaten so much chocolate over the past few days that this could possibly be a caffeine withdrawal headache. See, I don't consume caffeine. I ate a few of the See's truffles and ta da! I was mostly headache free today. Estate sale haul: Two small saccharine tablet bottles, a small book of etiquette, and some shuttles I hope to use to tat lace. One solitary doll hair. Now I have to get ready for my hobo party. That's just dirty. Malicious.
So, today marks the first of the three white elephant/dirty santa gift exchanges I am expected to attend. The second is tonight. The third is Saturday.
so today I had a high number. I stole someone else's gift, a lovely faberge-style music box that played the Sleeping Beauty theme. Let's pause the story right now and say yes, I understand this isn't your common white elephant gift. It was a mix of new things and old things. One woman's treasure is another woman's white elephant. one person ended up with a tile. So, through a weird fruit basket turnover type exchange someone ended up giftless and took the music box. Ok, this happens. then she gives the music box to the original owner. why? because she brought it. i suppose that's nice but it's also just MEAN. mean. i don't know what I did to this woman to deserve that. Still, I won one of two grand prizes in a game, I got a box of hand made cards that are all pretty cool looking, I'm getting ideas just looking at them. Labels: drama

boobaversary
12/13/2006
Two years ago TODAY i had my boobies taken in a bit. I was wearing a 36F the morning of the surgery. Today I'm wearing a 38DD but it doesn't fit well, but it's Victoria's Secret so what do you expect? Their bras suck. I haven't had a proper fitting since shortly after surgery, that one was a 36D, and i've put on a bit of weight since then. also reduction boobs are kind of weird--they don't exactly function as normal boobs when encased in bras. Interestingly the bras I've bought post-surgery that fit the best are the ones I bought at the expensive bra store where I shopped pre-operatively, the only place at the time that had bras in odd sizes (of course, now Lane Bryant has larger cup sizes. too little too late you bitches).

Life imitates television, but not in the good way.
So, I think the reason I was reluctant to watch Ugly Betty was because I thought it ight hit a little close to home, which it didn't. it's actually quite good and sticks to the novela formula. But today I kind of had a moment.
See, I was at the mall (see previous entry for more details) and had a bit of time to kill before my appointment. What's a girl to do? I didn't have my crochet bag so not that. I shopped instead. I like white house black market because when it comes to clothes I honestly prefer dark colors. They make it pretty simple and I've had good experiences in there before. It's pricy but they did have sale racks. I should let you know I wasn't exactly dressed for style, I was more dressed for comfort and was down to the dregs due to laundry day. I should also point out that I rarely wear good shoes to work. I do a lot of walking and dress shoes aren't always a good bet so I often wear athleticy type shoes. Not fashionable but there you are. So I notice that the other customers are offered dressing rooms and get nice tags on the dressing rooms with their names. This is pretty cool. What do I get? Not much. In order to even get a room I had to stand near the dressing room area and THEN didn't get the fancy tag with my name. Essentially I was ignored. Being ignored doesn't make you feel pretty.

I am starting to like Apple
As much as I hate their advertising campaigns and their devotees I do have to admit I like Apple. I make fun of the name Genius Bar but they do get the job done. seriously. Do you know what was wrong with my ipod? the plastic was mashed into the metal part causing issues with the hard drive so the dude just pulled the plastic part out a little and then put some stuff on it to make sure it worked. Dude was the same dude who checked it out before, so I like him and not just because he kind of looks like Parker Lewis's dad.
He put on some sports podcasts which really weren't interesting, and he also put some tech/sales staff podcasts intended for Apple employees. HMMMM. Yes, I did listen, and yes, they are as boring as you'd expect. I also bought an external hard drive, as my computer may die any day now. When it does, I'll probably go for a mac. Now, you can shut up. I only resisted because for work I use a PC and I kind of like to have compatible equipment. Since you can run XP then that just rocks. It's rather progressive I'd say. So I've got a working ipod. I've got an external hard drive. And, thanks to a kiosk in the mall, I now have some See's truffles. Labels: drama

what i want for xmas: a good night's sleep and a working ipod
12/11/2006
i've been having crazy dreams over the past several nights. i won't go into details on all of them, but will give you this taste:
i was a roller derby gal but it was the off season so i switched to foxy boxing. my first match was against a young, slender thing in a skimpy outfit. She was obviously the crowd favorite, I got booed. It's ok though, after seven rounds I was declared the winner. Now whatever could that dream mean? Best not think too deeply on these things. After work i'm headed over to the genius bar at the apple store, it would seem my ipod is officially dead. the hard drive is fucked and I'm pretty sure it's officially out of warranty so I may have to purchase a new one. I know it's not a necessity but really, it is. I'd rather have an ipod than a cell phone. What does this mean to you, the reader? it means I'm practically GIVING AWAY THE STORE! seriously, over the next few days I'm relisting some jewelry at $15 (includes shipping) and putting some stuff up for auction on ebay. I've got too much crap in my house and it has to go. Labels: drama

FRUSTRATION
This morning my ipod died. I went the whole day without, got the frowny face, all that. for a minute I thought it was dead for good but a good smack (what did I have to lose?) brought it back. I restored it and it is now resyncing (8500+ sound files plus other stuff). Still, I'm going to keep looking. Well, as much looking as I can do considering that an ipod is an ipod is an ipod and there really isn't any comparison shopping.
In addition my final grade still isn't posted. Allegedly it was to be posted this morning, the system was updated at 6:30-ish, no grade.

Downtown Nashville
12/09/2006
I don't spend too much time downtown, I suppose it's my dislike of less than ample parking. There's this crazy hodgepodge of old buildings and new construction with old faded ads and weird exposed sides of buildings that should have never been exposed. I'm thinking one day it might be fun to get a few extra packs of 669 polaroid film and head downtown. But you're not here to read about that sort of thing, if you were you'd be over at lileks.com.
So after a delicious lunch Steve and I headed to the TN State Museum for old timey music and mummy hunting. When my mom was a high schooler the big deal was to get to go to Nashville and see the mummy. It's kind of hidden but well worth finding. The mummy even has a cat. Right now there's this cool exhibit of country music memorabilia, you should go. It did nothing, however, to assuage my desire for some Manuel clothing and/or accessories. Finally, my trip back home included a stop at the now closing Tower Records. I figured it was as good a time as any. I did manage to get a few things I'd wanted for some time but just never got around to getting. C'est tout. We're lazy around here. Labels: nashville

It's official
12/07/2006
I'm now officialy a polaroid camera collector. You, avid reader, are well aware that I spend most Saturday mornings exploring estate sales. THis morning it happened to be in my neighborhood and just so happened to be right behind my church. It was clear that the house hadn't had a lick of work done since the 1970s--we're talking shag carpet, retro wallpaper, and the musty smells that accompany these sorts of houses. Sure enough, I bought another 600 series polaroid camera. it's blue! plastic! Also a vintage hat and a very Sophia Petrillo handbag.
The coolest though was an Addiator Duplex. This is easily the coolest thing I've seen in ages. I couldn't get the subtraction mechanism to work but dang, those germans and their efficiency. Labels: estate sales

Sorry Dr Gay, I couldn't wait
Sampler's open. I'm not going to post pictures, they can be found at the Sampler December/January Gallery.
This is a great one. Don't I say that every time? Don't I say that this one tops last month and I don't know how they're going to top it but they do? Oh yes. It was so big I had a difficult time getting it out of my tiny mailbox--in fact, I almost couldn't unlock the mailbox it was so full. Some of the highlights:
DO I count as a media outlet? Because I'd love to be on that media sampler list...

good times, good mail, cold weather
Have you seen Squidbillies? I heard about it through Sal who is an Unknown Hinson fan. Speaking of, Thursday, January 4, Mercy Lounge. It'll be gooder than hell.
I'm in a lot of pain right now. I don't know what's going on, but it feels like someone's jabbing a blunt dowel into my arm slowly but with a whole heck of a lot of muscle. Additionally I'm having muscle aches in a rather delicate area (hint: it's one of my boobs), an issue that's been going on intermittently since my surgery almost two years ago. I'll be fine, don't you worry. You know, I almost share too much. almost. But seriously, there's a lot I don't share. Ask Dr Gay, or ask Sally. So, I got the Dec/Jan Sampler in the mail. I MAY podcast with Dr G later, opening it during the cast. I'm getting a bit impatient so I may just open it and blog about it. Also I'm getting kind of tired. Speaking of tee shirts, if you requested one during my last offering you will be happy to know that it's been ordered. Yes, I was a little lazy BUT my final has been sent to the professor and so the semester is OVER! Tune in monday if you're really interested in how I did. I'm predicting an A-. So since the people who have known me the longest all seem to be on myspace reply to this with something I may be forgetting/blocking/repressing. and remember this: sometimes people I work with are afraid to approach me, so if it's PG or PG-13 rated that may work in my favor.

Time for an update
So it only flurried for a minute. no sticking because it was 60 yesterday.
I only know it was snowing because I walked over for my Neurology appt. See, you may remember that I had some dizzy spells and numbness over a few months and finally decided to see a MD about it. I had an MRI on my birthday, a followup the day after. Today was neurology where the MD found nothing wrong so decided on another MRI. Now what you're thinking is that they really have no need for that since they did one on the 20th of last month. But see, this one's different. This one's head and c-spine. The first one was to look at the brain for lesions, this is to look for something else. What that is I'm not sure, but i'm sure I'll find out. Labels: health

Have you seen Jenna Jameson lately? I don't mean around your neighborhood, I mean on the television, internets, the back room at your video store. Hey, I'm not here to judge. I've caught parts of the Big in 06 awards and she was a presenter. I think she's about my age if not a scoche older. Having said all that...
So, I always thought that Jenna was beautiful. Seriously, the kind of beauty that you can see even without the piles of makeup on her face. But on the Big in 06 awards she looks, well, awful. As I mentioned she's close to my age but has already fallen victim to the plastic surgeon. She's got the cat eyes, the puffy lips usually seen on women twice her age. On top of that she's caught the hollywood skinny virus--you know, the one that results in prominent sternum and toothpick arms? The beef jerky look? I'd post images but I'm a little afraid of what the google image search feature might turn up. Labels: pop culture

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN???
12/04/2006
So the short version is that somewhere in PA there was some sort of outage and Dunder Mifflin web hosting lost connection. The good news is my email didn't seem to bounce. Also, there was really nothing worth blogging about: I got my paper done, the guy in the next booth was playing world of warcraft, we watched the incredibles in our last class of the semester. Good times.
Listen to the podcast now.

Mystery solved and thanks for all the fish!
12/02/2006
I blogged previously about a cool book about Welles and Hearst that I received. The mystery has been solved, and I would like to say that it wasn't exactly a mystery, as only one person knows me well enough to know of my love of Welles vs Hearst, that's Angi. Thank you Angi! This book has been moved to the top of my queue (PS check out RKO 281).
Speaking of birthdays Friday night I finally got the cake. It's a delicious Red Velvet from the Sweet 16th. Did you hear the angels singing? Yes, they are exalting the beauty of the cake. Denny to the left of me, flashy to the right, here I am stuch in the middle with YOU. Anyway, getting back to birthdays. Last night Mandy took me out for my birthday dinner at Battered and Fried, which, contrary to what the name may imply had some absolutely amazing sushi. We then enjoyed red velvet cake and a Discovery channel special about removing a parasitic twin which nearly caused the red velvet to make an unwelcome return. I then came home and promptly fell asleep on the couch waiting for Saturday Night Live to come on. I had kind of wanted to make the trip to The End for some fine music but it was not going to happen.

This morning's haul and my hair cut.
I managed to fall asleep around 9pm last night and woke up around 7.30 this morn. SO I call my mom who wasn't expecting me to be awake so early and wasn't exactly ready to go yet. We eventually made it out and hit three estate sales.
The first two were on the same street. Nothing too exciting at the first--it was just a few rooms with a few things. I managed to get an ice cream maker that was missing a part (a part which will cost $30 plus shipping but that's cool, whatever). Next was across the street and a door or two down. My friend Kate managed to make it to the sale the day before (and actually called, coincidentally, while I was there and asked me to put her name on something and what the price would be. I found two TWO polaroid land cameras, a J66 and a 4-something. One is a rollfilm camera for which I won't find film. The other is a relatively recent model that has a lot of plastic parts and a nifty timer for photos--it will take packfilm which is excellent as that's what I have. I tell SK about it and she says "so, what does this make, three?" I tell her no, five. She asks if I'm collecting polaroids, I tell her sure, might as well be. Anyway. Also found a cute hat, a cute pink clutch, and a 1974 Vanderbilt Commodore (the annual). Why is this interesting, do you ask? Because I happened to open it to the page for the school paper and saw a picture of Mr. John Bloom, but you might know him better as former Monstervision host and writer Joe Bob Briggs. Then to the last one, which had some neat old knitting and crochet patterns. And next, to get this hair cut and these brows managed. My hairstylist is now in this cool salon in an office building where you kind of have to know it exists first. Her prices were also lower. It is nothing drastic, pictures to come. I wanted side bangs, hairstylist wanted those across the forehead straight blunt bangs. I mentioned this to Sally and she said she liked the blunt bangs, that I could pull them off without looking rockabilly. I told her it's too East Nashville and I've got to represent the West side. Know what I mean, bitches? Labels: estate sales

I'm about to admit something really lame. Seriously. This will knock me off the pedestal you've put me on, may even cause me to lose readership.
For many years I religiously watched the Real World on MTV. I suppose it's the sociological aspect that I love. I am well aware that our opinions are manipulated through editing. I'm also aware of casting to create conflict. In other words, I'm not new to this dog and pony show. Or, perhaps more accurately, this donkey show. It's been many years though since I've followed a full season. If there's an episode on I'll watch it but I don't retain much and since every episode is the same I never remember if I've seen it before or not. So this morn I'm watching the newest which I think is in Denver. I think this may be the most nondescript cast ever. Oh, and homely, did I mention that? One of the girls is kind of pretty (I don't know her name, sorry), but everyone else blends in. I think it was pretty early in the season and it seems as though one of the dudes has already hooked up with TWO of the girls. That's just gross. I think I'm getting old because the idea of sex with near strangers or a friends with benefits situation just doesn't sound appealing any longer. Edited becasue I just rewound the current episode and found that the kind of pretty one is from Nashville. Oh, and do these people have parents? Because the only way I could act this way on a nationally televised program would be if all my family and friends were dead. Labels: pop culture, television

One More Down: Tideland by Mitch Cullin
I just finished this during my lunch break and holy crap this is the most messed up thing. For real.
I have heard the horrid reviews of the Terry Gilliam film so I decided to read the book first. So, it should go without saying that I'm going to skip the movie. i'm quite happy with messed up but this is the sort of messed up I couldn't get behind. honestly. so messed up I almost didn't go and find it on amanzon to post the link you see to the left. But then I realized that you are all entitled to your own opinion and if you're curious who am I to stop you? Labels: books
