My experience with the gas shortage
It's still ridiculous. People have been queueing up at stations everywhere, and from what I hear it's often just to top of the tank. If anything comes from this I hope it's that people will trade in for more fuel efficient vehicles.
Another thing to remember is that there ARE busses and they don't anticipate that the shortage will affect public transport. My plan was to get gas today and if I couldn't I would take advantage of the MTA. Luckily I got gas at 6AM today. My mom calls me on her way to work and tells me that a station about a mile awasy has gas and short lines. "But I'm in my pajamas!" "Put a t-shirt on over them!" "But I might be late for work!" "Just tell them you had to get gas!" "Mom, I don't think the people in line would be symp--oh you mean my boss. Right." So I got there, got my gas ($3.99 for regular which isn't terrible--at least the stations aren't gouging like they could). No line and I know at least one pump was open, possibly more. I might add that I wore no bra to the station--four years ago it would've been a necessity, now it's an option.
