Prince Every Day in 2005

My stated goal is to listen to at least one Prince song every day. No reason, it just seems like it would be fun. As a side goal I'd like to have every album (not singles and that sort of thing, that would just be too much) he has released and any movie he was in. Maybe even Girl 6, the soundtrack of which is mostly Prince songs. I'll document it here. Not so much reviews, but more strema of conciousness ramblings, what I do best. There will probably be a lot of repeated information, so beware of that. I'll also include Amazon links to all albums mentioned.

1/1/05:

Dirty Mind, full album--Early Prince (1980, if my memory serves). It has the song "Uptown", which I like because my friend Brent tells me I have an Uptown look. I have not been there yet, but I plan to by year's end. Everyone's going there so I figure looking Uptown can only be a good thing. Also, Prince on the cover wearing a banana hammock and a fancy Prince coat. It's not as clever as naked Prince on the back of a pegasus, but it's a close second.

symbol , full album--It would seem I got the edited version. It has the song "Sexy MF", only it's censored. blech. Anyway, I used to have this friend who explained some hidden stuff in the song "7" (beyond the book of Revelation stuff), none of which I remember anymore.

1/2/05:

Today I taped a bunch of stuff to keep in my car for emergencies. It looks like a Prince overload, so here goes...

Purple Rain, full album--this is my second copy, my first disappeared with no trace. I'm sure it's in my pile of crap somewhere. It is hard for me to listen to just one song on this CD, the whole thing is fantastic. I remember the first time I saw the movie: I was at my cousin Shellie's house and her sister Beth let us watch it but during the nude scenes she adjusted the brightness so we couldn't see Appollonia's boobies (as though that's the most objectionable part).

The Gold Experience: "P Control", "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", "Eye Hate U", "Billy Jack Bitch"--I borrowed this from my sister. I absolutely love the song "Eye Hate U". I mean, damn. And I'm not sure if this is a universal thing or just a Nashville thing but every single solitary dance type club has "P Control" on the playlist. It doesn't matter what sort of crowd the club caters to, they're going to play it and I'm going to dance to it. And I usually leave once it's over. I haven't been dancing in forever...fuck. I need to go.

The Hits v.1: "Pop Life", "I Feel For U", "When U Were Mine", "Uptown", "1999", "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"-- My first exposure to "When U Were Mine" was on She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper (I like to pronounce her name like the guy in "Just One Of The Guys"). Damn, did I love that record. But I was a redhead, and so was she (yes, it was fake, but I was a kid). My favorite song was "She Bop" which I now understand is about masturbation. And "Uptown", well, we've already discussed that.

The Hits v.2: "Alphabet St.", "Thieves in the Temple", "Diamonds and Pearls", "7", "Controversy", "Dirty Mind", "I Wanna Be Your Lover"--"Thieves" is such a cool song, but I have to admit I've never listened to the lyrics. I try not to, because doing just that ruined the song "Sign O' The Times" for me. You know, the NPG is good and whatever, but to me nothing is cooler than the Revolution. I read that Prince wants nothing to do with either Wendy or Lisa (sorry, I can't remember which, I'm a bad fan I guess) because she is a lesbian and he is a Jehovah's Witness. I told Brent, my friend in the Twin Cities, that if Prince comes to his door and offers a Watchtower that he better LET THAT PURPLE LOVIN' MERN IN HIS HOUSE. Dang, this taping is taking a while. I figured I'd wait until this tape was full and then make my way to Taco Bell, but it might be NEVER ENDING. Wait...the family is going to Krystal--rescue!

1/3/05:

The Hits: "I Feel For U", "When U Were Mine", "Uptown", "1999", "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man", "Alphabet St.", "Thieves in the Temple" Purple Rain, full album--Didn't Jordan Knight cover "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"? It seems like Teri told me that once. I found out that a lot of the songs I taped didn't make it. So I see a retaping in my future!

1/4/05:

"Irresistible Bitch"--someone tell me which album this is on? I'm too lazy to look it up.

1/5/05:

"Gett Off"--One time I was privy to an argument about this song: was it twenty-two or twenty-three positions in a one night stand? My CD player was commandeered to solve it. If I remember correctly, this is the song you should associate with assless pants.

I told a friend about my project, she told me about her roommate running into Prince at Border's. She was mocked a little by Prince, but she was (understandishably) starstruck.

1/6/05:

"Gett Off", "Batdance"--It was completely by accident that I heard "Gett Off" again today. I mean, it's a good song and all but I don't have a driving desire to listen to it several times a week. And, oh, "Batdance". Back in the day I had the Batman shirt and everything. In fact, the Saturday morning after Batman came out we waited in line to see it. One of our parents was kind enough to go to the theatre and pick up tickets while us adolescent girls bowled our tween asses off. Except we weren't called tweens back then as there were no Olsen twins. Maybe we weren't tweens? I was 13, and I think only one of us wasn't, she was 12. And then as we waited in the crowd at the Cineplex Odeon and some skeevy dudes were checking us out. The 12 year old was convinced one was wearing x-ray specs. The sound went out during one scene so we all got our money back.

1/7/05:

"Erotic City", "I Would Die 4 U", "Baby I'm A Star"--I love, love, love "I Would Die 4 U" so much that I would marry it (instead of going through with my arranged Hindu wedding). "Erotic City" makes me want to shake my ass. I understand that if you go up to a club DJ and request it that means you desire to have sex in the DJ booth.

1/8/05:

This is the moment where I decide NOT to document EVERY Prince song I listen to in a day.

"Sexy MF"--Funny I should hear this song driving to "Whad'ya Know" hosted by Michael Feldman. Is he sexy? You be the judge.

1/9/05:

"Raspberry Beret"--Heard at 3am driving home. I sang to keep myself awake, I was surprised how much of the song I remembered.

"If I Was Your Girlfriend"--Such a super song. All about male/female intimacy v female/female platonic intimacy.

"Billy Jack Bitch"--This song reminds me of my friend Jesi because she loves the movie "Billy Jack". I know this is not what Prince intended.

1/10/05:

"1999"--This has one of my favorite lyrics ever:

"If you didn't come to party,
don't bother knocking on my door.
I've got a lion in my pocket,
and baby he's ready to roar."

1/11/05:

"When Doves Cry"--I sat in my car to finish listening to this. Maybe it was the lack of sleep but it was the BEST SONG EVER and I had to hear it.

1/12/05:

"Pussy Control"--So, my chances of ever hearing Prince play this live are very, very slim.

1/13/05:

"Gett Off"--Extra consonants make it extra funky.

3/4 of "U Got The Look"--At the gym! huzzah!

1/14/05:

"Eye Hate U"--Remind me if I'm dating Prince not to cheat on him because DAMN! this is the prettiest angry song ever.
